Son of a merchant. Joined the regiment of Bourbon-Infanterie on 1 June 1776 and served with it in the colonies for eight years. Left the army on 1 June 1784, and returned to his native town. On 12 August 1792 he was elected lieutenant-colonel of the 1st battalion of grenadiers of the Drôme. In 1793, he served at the siege of Toulon. From 1794 -5 he was with the Army of the Eastern Pyrenees, earning particular distinction at the siege of Bellegarde. He was wounded three times during the year and was promoted general of brigade. When peace was made with Spain, he was transferred to the Army of Italy with Augereau's division. He was wounded again at Arcole. Just before leaving for the Egyptian expedition, Bonaparte appointed him acting general of division (13 May 1798). Took part in the battle of the Pyramids and the expedition to Syria, and was mortally wounded at the siege of St Jean d'Acre. Sources: Anon.
