A part-time historian (he worked in the administration of the department of finance), he wrote some important studies of Napoleon's early career, as well as other histories. His "Bonaparte en Italie" (Paris, 1899) is still the most detailed treatment of the first couple of months of the 1796 campaign. It is a minutely footnoted work with a copious bibliography and various appendices giving orders of battle and short biographies of participants. It is over 750 pages in length.
