b. 1733, Rochhausen, Westphalia
d. 16 November 1796, Arcole
"Joined Infantry Regiment Moltke, no. 9, as an ensign, and between 1750 and 1795 progressed through all the ranks to General-Major. During this time, he proved on every occasion, in the Prussian, Turkish and French wars, his particular bravery and insight. The unlucky day of Arcole was also fatal for him. Opposing the superior strength of the enemy under Massena, surrounded by marshes, he saw confusion spread among his troops, and death fell to his lot." Wurzbach, C., von. Biographisches Lexikon des Kaiserthums Oesterreich, 1856-91, vol. 2, p. 106.
