Charles, Louis-Hippolyte-Joseph

b. 5 July 1773, Romans
d. 9 March 1837, Génissieux, near Romans

The true love of Josephine's life. Joined a company of guides forming at Besançon in 1790. Adjoint of Leclerc when the latter was at Marseille. Met Josephine in Paris. Accompanied her to Milan. Moved into Palazzo Serbelloni whenever Bonaparte moved out. Bonaparte later sent him back to Paris. His friendship with Duroc and Junot probably helped him escape greater trouble with Bonaparte. See Balteau, J. and others. Dictionnaire de biographie française, 1933-, vol 8, p. 582.
