"Was a lieutenant, then a captain in the engineers, and resigned in 1780 to dedicate himself to the study of the sciences. Partisan of the Revolution, he was, under Roland, secretary-general of the Ministry of the Interior, and banished in 1793. Minister of Finance on 1 October 1794, he held this post until 12 February 1796. Minister plenipotentiary in Genoa, he took an important part in the organisation of the new Italian republics, but had to return to private life as a result of troubles with General Championnet. Prefect of Escaut, at Antwerp, from 1800 to 1808, he then became Minister of Finance to King Joseph in Spain, and only returned to France in 1813. Prefect of the Saône-and-Loire during the Hundred Days (27 April 1815), he bravely defended the town of Macon against the invasion." Bouvier, F. Bonaparte en Italie, 1796, 1899, p. 657-8.
