"Soldier in the regiment of Champagne (7th infantry) from 1775 to 1791, when he reached the rank of sergeant. He was promoted second-lieutenant in the regiment on 12 January 1792, lieutenant on 26 April 1792, captain on 3 September 1792, and was appointed adjudant-général chef de brigade on 25 December 1793. General of brigade on 24 November 1794 (confirmed on 13 June 1795), general of division on 7 February 1798. He commanded the 23rd military division in Corsica from 1798-1799, and the 6th military division at Besançon from 1801-1805, then 1805-6.
