The French infantry storm one of the redoubts defended by the Austrians. In the background is the coast of the Western Riviera, with a number of ships in action.

Bonaparte at Lonato, by Evans/Courboin
The painting shows an incident from the period of operations leading up to the battle of Castiglione. Napoleon Bonaparte and a small number of troops found themselves in the presence of a larger number of Austrian troops that were trying to make their way out of an encirclement. Bonaparte persuaded them to surrender.
